Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 2:30pm. The roll was called and a quorum was present.
Minutes from previous meeting: Tabled until next meeting; due to the fact copies were not distributed.
Welcome new members: New members Mr. Overton, Mr. Delgardo and Ms. Hamilton introduced themselves and shared a bit about their agencies and experience.
Chairman Glover recently attended the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Conference held in New Orleans, LA. He represented both Tempe Police Department and the ACAAA. He shared information around officers being targeted and asked to leave a Starbucks here in Arizona which resulted in a program that will be moving forward called “coffee with a cop” more information to come.
Chairman Glover mentioned the Arizona State University – Academy for Justice Program. He will be working with Dawn Walton scheduling town halls
Chairman Glover mentioned that there has been a rise of hate crimes in Arizona and this was acknowledge and discussed in July 2019 at the Arizona Chief of Police Conference. He discussed the need to have a uniformed policy of how to report or categorize the information amongst all officers. This is an issue that will require further research and education.
Executive Directors’ report: Mr. Campbell discussed the Black Education Town hall held on August 5, 2019 at Desert Vista High School. It was a well supported and attended event. Mr. Campbell mentioned that Dominique Nelms has been hired as the new part-time Executive Assistant at the office of ACAAA and her first day will be August 26, 2019. She will focus on updating the website and assisting the commission. Mr. Campbell announced there will be Police Listening Session meeting held in the executive tower 2nd floor conference room on August 29, 2019 at 5:30 pm to discuss Phoenix Policing.
Old business: None to discus
New business: Ms. Dartez announced that the Health Summit scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2019 at Phoenix College is currently accepting registrations and sponsors. She will share more information as to the numbers to determine if additional funds will be needed to support all activities on this day. Ms. Dartez mentioned her work in establishing a new Trade School in Phoenix soon
Call to the public: Larry Henry Jr., Criminal Justice Coordinator at Flagstaff County Manager’s Office addressed the commission to introduce himself and offer his assistance moving forward.
Announcements: Ms. Hamilton announced the upcoming 5th Annual Lighting Arizona Purple Event to educate and prevent domestic violence. This event will be held on October 1, 2019 at 6:00pm on the House Lawn at the state capitol. She shared the flyer with the commission and asked that it be shared on their distribution list. Ms. Hamilton announced an upcoming Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith and Family Tribal Consultation on Friday, September 27, 2019 at 10:00am which is open to the public to attend.
Adjournment: A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Mr. Bayless and 2nd by Mr. Delgardo. The meeting was adjourned at 4:15p.m.
